Our poker tutorial is a great way to learn the card game loved by millions. /515021-How-to-Bet-Poker-Chips-Poker-Tutorials
Hey, I'm Nicky Numbers, Professional Poker Player, and today, I'm going to show you how to bet your poker chips. So, a lot of people use various techniques for how they actually put their chips into a pot, whether it's an actual bet, a raise, or a call. The first technique I'm going to talk about, is putting your chips into the pot neatly, in separate piles of equal amounts. So, let's say I'm going to bet twenty red chips. I slide my stack forward. I cut them in half. I cut them in quarters. And, now everybody can see how much I wagered. Another way people do the same thing, is they bring out a full stack, and cut it off into fives. And, they stack it out neatly, or sometimes after the last cut, they'll flurry the last one out, so everybody can see how much was in each stack.
Standard is stacks of five, but sometimes you'll see people do stacks of four, or ten, or some other odd amount. Some people when they're going to bet chips, they just put them into the pot, and they just flutter them messily, so, they know they're going to bet five white chips, and they just thrown them in. Now, when I say throw them into the pot, I don't actually mean, throw them into the pot. If there's chips out there, and there's a pot, you never, ever, ever want your chips to hit that pot. That's called splashing the pot, and is extremely bad etiquette. It keeps people from being able to see how much you wagered, and it confuses the pot.
So, if you do flurry your chips, always make sure you're know where near the pot, which is the center of the table. And no where near the chips in front of anyone else. So, you want to flurry into the open. Some people do a flurry that's very neat, where they take their chips, say they're going to bet six white chips, and they just let them tip over, as opposed to making extremely messy, and not caring. The reason this matters, is because how you put your chips into the pot, can give away information about your hand. You're giving away behavioral information based on how you bet your chips. So, you want to bet your chips consistently, whether you consistently do it messy, or, you consistently do it neatly, you want to do it consistently. Because if you sometimes do this, and sometimes do that, you're going to fall into patterns, and patterns are the enemy of poker players.
So, many times, if you know you're going to bet exactly ten chips, or exactly twenty chips, and you have your chips logically arranged, like you should in stacks of twenty, then you can just break off any chips you have on top, and just slide out a stack of twenty. If you know you're going to bet a stack of ten, then you can just cut your chips in half, and slide out a stack of ten. Say you want to bet multiple stacks. Then what you want to do, is size out the exact amount you want to bet. Okay, I want to bet twenty white, twenty red, and two green, and then you can slide them out in one motion.
What you cannot do, is go back to your stack. So, I cannot make a bet that's like this. Come back to my stack, and then add more chips. If you're putting chips into a pot, and you don't announce it, you need to do it in a single motion, which means that if you're going to something like go all in, you have to learn how to move stacks. So, you want to practice setting up stacks of twenty, and sliding them along the felt. What you don't want to do, is do that, when you're trying to go all in. Now, you know how to bet poker chips, so that you can do it consistently, in the same way , and not fall into patterns.

poker chip set Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy poker chip set, right? No!

Plastic Poker Chips

There are really two types of common plastic poker chips available. The cheapest is the set commonly found in a round carrier. If you are playing friendly ‘kitchen table’ poker, these plastic chips, which can be purchased in any major chainstore will suffice. The second is Diamond chips that are made of plastic, but standard casino size and are a bit heavier than the cheaper plastic chips. These chips are solid in color and perfect for friendly poker games.

Composite Poker Chips

This is the most common poker chip purchased and used in regular homegames. They can also be found in chain stores and often come with a dealer button, deck of cards and a cut card. These chips are often adorned with dice, diamonds, or card suits on the edges of the chips. They are colored to match industry standards. They typically weigh 11.grams due to a metal insert. These chips work fine for a small stakes poker game or tournament where the risk of someone ‘running in chips’ is minimal. The most common complaint about these chips is they are slippery.

Customized composite chips with the metal insert are a common option for serious homegames. These are by far the most popular chips ordered on the internet. There are thousands of design options available for these chips. The designs can be put on label stickers, hot stamped, or engraved into the chip. The most popular weight is 11.grams. There is also a softer variation of this chip that does not have a metal insert for those players who do not like the ring of a metal inserted chip.

Color of the Poker Chips

Try to maintain the industry standard when selecting the color of your chips. This helps reduce confusion among players who are used to betting five dollars when they toss a red chip into the pot and one hundred dollars when they bet a black chip. You will need about four different colored chips to play in a standard poker game and the two lowest valued chips will compromise the largest percentage of your set.

Casino Poker Chips

After selecting the dominant color of each chip, you will also have the option of selecting a secondary or tertiary accent color, which is usually around the edge of the chip. Each additional color adds to the price of the chip. Be sure to select accent colors that completely differ from the accent colors on the other chip denominations. Chip denominations can get easily mixed when stacking them if the accent colors are too similar.

Weight of the Poker Chips

If you decide against expensive clay chips, the weight of all other poker chips is one of the most important factors to consider. Lightweight chips are typically cheaper, but heavier chips are more durable. If you plan on hosting frequent poker games, you will be better off in the long run investing money in chips that will not need to be constantly replaced. In addition, players prefer to play with heavier chips which are easier to maneuver and riffle.

Stickers

You can purchase round stickers in almost any design to place on the poker chips you choose. You can even buy blank chip stickers and customize them yourself on your own computer. If you go this route, consider buying chips with a recessed center so the stickers are easier to place and harder for players to damage.

Chip stickers make it easy to replace a chip that has been battered on the face, but keep in mind they are just stickers, so they will be easier to batter in the first place. If you decide on using stickers to mark your chips, be sure to stick to the common color denominations rather than one chip color with different labels. Otherwise, someone could sneak chips out and replace the stickers with higher denominations and sneak them back later and scam you out of money.

Gold or Silver Foil Stamping

Chips can be hot stamped with gold or silver lettering, usually only on chips with a solid colored center. It is common to use initials or dollar denominations. Keep in mind if you choose to have the dollar value stamped on the face, you lose the flexibility to change the value of the chips. Also, be aware that the gold & silver sometimes flakes off the chip with wear, especially with low quality manufacturing.

Engraved Poker Chips

Engraving your chips will make it less likely for someone to sneak chips into your game or counterfeit your chips. Manufacturers will allow you to engrave anything you want on the chips for a set price per chip. It is common to have your name, initials or place of business engraved on the face of the chip. You have to pay double if you want both sides engraved. If you really want a customized chip that will make counterfeiting difficult, scan your signature and have it engraved on the chips.

Design Poker Chips

Clay and Composite chips are generally available in types of design: single color, two colors and three colors. If the single color can seem a little dull, the three colors may be a little bit too much and make it less “class”. The two color chips are by far the more popular. In most cases, no value is printed on the chips, so you can create your own color code.

Mid-range plastic

These are plastic chips, but are manufactured with a different process that gives them a softer feel than the hard plastic chips. Compared to ABS plastic chips, these don’t feel as slippery. They sound better and stack better because of their softer, duller surface. They have a recessed center that can be customized. Looks-wise, these chips also more closely resemble clay chips with decent-looking molds, similar inlays, and multi-color edgespot designs. The downside is that they still have a plastic feel and look plastic up close. They still have a metal insert and don’t sound exactly like clay chips. And you can’t customize the edge spot colors.

These are definitely mid-range chips – and are at the lower end of the range of mid-range chips. They are a nice upgrade from ABS plastic, but still far below casino-grade chips, and even compression clay composites. Consequently, you’ll pay a little more for these over ABS plastic chips, but you are paying much less than clay chips. The less expensive chips in this category (such as Nexgens) are a good alternative to ABS chips. But the more expensive chips in this category, such as injection-molded Dunes and Desert Palms are way over-priced at 25-30 cents. For that price, you can upgrade to the next tier of chips and get a nice set of compression-molded “clay composites”.

SUMMARY: If you are looking for something better than 11.gram Dice chips but can’t really afford anything better, then buying these at 1cents each is fine. But if you are spending 20 cents or more, then upgrade to better chips. None of the chips in this category will be good enough to impress poker chip snobs.

Poker tournaments are the ultimate experience in poker competition. They combine the thrill of a sprint with the discipline of a distance race. You can eliminate an opponent quickly, in any single hand, but you must also have the patience and strategy to pick your spots and last until the end.

With the growing popularity of tournaments on television, in casinos, and online, many poker players are looking to change up their weekend cash games with their buddies and hold their own home poker tournaments. A well-run tournament can provide you and your friends an afternoon, evening, or even an entire weekend of fun, and all at a cost that is almost entirely up to you. The following is a guide on how to host your own home poker tournament. Read all of it, read parts of it, take whatever is useful for you. Follow it word-for-word or change every piece. What matters most is that you have fun.

Dealer Button

You can get by just fine without a dealer button, but they do help to avoid confusion and keep track of who the current dealer is, as well as making your home poker tournament look more professional. The standard dealer button is simply a white puck, about twice the size of a poker chip, with the word “DEALER” printed on it. This is placed in front of whoever is sitting in the dealer position. If you don’t have a dealer button, you can really use anything in its place – an actual button, a quarter, a coaster, whatever.

Cut Card

A cut card is a plastic card that is slid into the deck in order to separate it into two sections to be cut. The cut card then remains on the bottom of the deck so nobody can see what card is on the bottom, in the event that the dealer holds the deck in such a manner that makes it easy for others to peek. If you do not have a cut card, you can use a spare card such as a joker, or more preferably, two spare cards taped together in order to make it feel different than the rest of cards.

You will need some way to time the rounds so you know when to increase the blinds. For lack of a better tool, you can use a kitchen timer or stop watch. If you want to enhance your tournament experience, however, consider buying a specialty timer that not only counts down the rounds, but also keeps track of the blinds and antes for you as well. One such product, Poker Genie, has become popular. The Genie is a portable timer with a large, bright display that is fully customizable so you can enter your blind structure, round times, and antes. The timer can be placed anywhere in the room for all to see.

A less expensive and more versatile option is the DB Dealer digital dealer button, which combines the dealer puck with a basic level timer. It does not show what the blinds are like Poker Genie, but it is smaller and merges two pieces of equipment into one.

Rules Sheets and Other Charts

Not only should you go over the tournament and house rules before beginning play, but you should also distribute a sheet of these rules to every table, so everyone has a reference. It will make your life as a tournament director easier, as you won’t have to answer tons of questions, and it will keep the game moving.

Tournament Start

Chips

When the lowest denominations of chips are no longer necessary to cover the blinds or antes, it is time to color-up, or replace those chips with new values, usually chips of a different color (as stated earlier, if you are short on colors, you can just change the value of the color that is no longer needed).

Dealers

In most home poker tournaments I have played in, there were no dedicated dealers. Each player took turns dealing. It is easy to do, and while people have different skill levels when it comes to shuffling (I stink), it usually works out perfectly fine. The best way to structure this method is to have the person to the right of the dealer shuffle the second deck to prepare it for the next hand, while the person to the left of the dealer cuts the deck. This way, any possible cheating by the dealer is eliminated, since his only activity will be to deal the cards. As an added bonus, you don’t need a dealer button, since the dealer is easily identified by the deck of cards in his hand.

If one player at each table is the full-time dealer, simply rotate the second deck around the table so somebody different shuffles each hand. The card-cutting duties should be rotated, as well. If the dealer is not actually playing, you can use the same setup, as having the next deck ready before the hand is over speeds up play significantly. In any “fixed” dealer situation, be sure he is positioned in the middle of the table where he can easily deal to each player and reach all the chips.

Etiquette

Be nice – this really applies to everything in life. Nobody wants to play with a jerk.

No stalling – it’s ok if you need to think about the hand, but intentionally stalling is both annoying and unfair, since it results in less hands being dealt per level.

Play in turn – wait until it is your turn to act before moving your chips, mucking your cards, or announcing your play. Playing out of turn unfairly influences the other players.

Don’t splash the pot – when betting, stack your chips neatly in front of your cards. Splashing the pot (throwing your chips into the pot), makes it difficult for the other players to see how much you bet, and a chip might end up rolling off the table.

Worth

No string bets – make a single bet per turn. Do not place a bet then go back to your stack for more. This often results in a reaction from your opponents, allowing you to get a better read on them. A big no-no.

Keep it Simple

It’s all about the less is more mentality when starting a home game.

One of the best things you can do to keep a home game running smoothly is have one person who handles all the buying in, cashing out and rebuys.

It’s critical, because if you have everyone getting their own chips mistakes (both honest and not so-honest) are bound to happen.

It’s an all too familiar situation where at the end of the night two guys go to cash out and there isn’t enough money to cover the chips that are in play. That’s when people get upset.

You’ll also have to choose chip dominations and we’re going to reiterate the point that simple is better. Don’t use all five colors that came with your chip set just because you can.

Meanwhile if you’re setting up a tournament with 1,500 starting stacks, use three colors for chips, 2chips and 100 chips.

Try to stick with the same colors for every game. It reduces confusion for regulars at the table.

Stock the cage with change

Unless he has nominated somebody else, the host is responsible for collecting entry requirements, and distributing chips and prizes. I use a little portable safe which is just spacious enough to contain entry requirements and a few larger domination chips for players wishing to top-up their stacks or re-buy.

Poker

You can never expect players to arrive with pocketfuls of change, no matter how many times you ask them, so ensure that you take precautions. This makes exchanging chips for their correct value at the end of the night much easier. Remember to arrange your chips into easily managed piles before the guests arrive so that you can quickly dispense them to the player after collecting their entry requirement.

If you are inviting strangers to your game, keep the chip box locked and in a secure place. It is rare that anybody will attempt to steal from you, and it certainly shouldn’t be a worry if you have invited only friends. However, on one of my poker nights, a couple of dubious characters somehow ended up at the table. One of them was seemingly drunk and used this as an excuse for knocking the portable safe onto the floor and trying to pocket some notes while I was cursing and scrambling to pick up the contents. He failed and quickly left the game before he was forcibly ejected. This is the only time an incidence like this has occurred in my poker home games but I should point out that I very rarely invite players who I don’t know.

Set the right environment -Furniture and Lighting

For poker home games, I tend to arrange my apartment in the same manner as any other social gathering such as a party or dinner party. I move the playing table into the center of the room and realign the surrounding furniture so that there is ample space to walk around the table. I use lamps or desk lights to illuminate the felt surface whilst turning off the main lights so that the table area is brightly lit in contrast to the darkness of the surrounding room. This creates an intimate, ambient feel.

Will you allow players to smoke or keep their drinks on the table during your poker home games? Although many poker tables are built with cup holders, they won’t prevent clumsy or drunken guests from spilling red wine across the flop as they lunge to rake in a huge pot they’ve just won. If you don’t allow drinks on the table, you will need to provide alternative surfaces, such as mini-tables or food carts, otherwise players will be perpetually holding their drink in one hand and counting chips with the other or having to reach down and place their drinks on the floor.

Remind people to bring their own drinks unless you are wealthy enough to keep a fully stocked bar. If you intend to rotate poker evenings between friends, playing at a different house each week or month, then the host could be in charge of providing drinks and food whenever the event is held at their respective home. This arrangement may not go down too well with a tea-total member of the group if the other players are raging alcoholics with penchants for champagne and single malt whiskeys. If you are the permanent host and you want to shop for the supplies yourself, you might consider asking guests for a small contribution to cover the cost of the food and drink.

As with hosting a party, make sure all of your preparatory chores are completed before the guests arrive so that you can devote your energies to pouring drinks, taking coats and getting the game underway.

Deal with drunk or abusive players

Excessively drunk or verbally aggressive players may need to be ordered to tone down their behavior if it is slowing down the game or irritating other players. This is a common sense move that is obviously applicable to all social events and not just a poker game.

MOVING ON TO WHICH BALLS ARE RIGHT FOR YOU.

There is one another option to consider. Some chip manufacturers will customize your chips with your own design. These can come as a “hot stamped” imprint, as a printed label that is permanently affixed to the chip, or in the case ceramic chips the design can be built into the chip itself. Prices for this option vary widely, so shop around if this interests you.

Other Recommendations

I would immediately rule out the very cheap plastic chips and the very cheapest of the metal filled chips. Beyond that, however, I don’t think there is really much of a difference in how your poker-playing guests will react to the chips.

I’ve played in home games with exquisite ceramic chips and with Paulson’s. They were beautiful to behold. But I noticed no one really seemed to care. I’ve found that poker players are typically so completely engaged in how much they were up or down that the look of their chips was the last thing they cared about. That being said, you might care about that, and might take great pride in having a truly beautiful set or chips that remind you of what you play with at the nearest casino.

How Much Are White Poker Chips Worth

One last item to consider — there are very few brick-and-mortar stores that sell a wide variety of poker chips (The Gambler’s General Store in Las Vegas is a great exception). Target, Walmart and a few other national retail chains may have boxed sets for sale, but the chips themselves will still be hidden. That means for the most part, you’ll probably be looking online at an image of a chip — not the real thing — when you contemplate a purchase.

How Much Is A Red And White Poker Chip Worth

For that reason, I recommend that before you buy a complete set of chips, especially an expensive one, that you either purchase or ask the company to send you for free some sample chips. Catalogs, computer screens, and the like don’t really do a chip justice. For that you’ll need to see, hold, and use the chip itself.

How to save up to 86%? Here is little trick.

You must visit the page of sales. Here is the link. If you don’t care about which brand is better, then you can choose the poker chip set by the price and buy from the one who will offer the greatest discount.

Final Word

First of all thanks for reading my article to the end! I hope you find my reviews listed here useful and that it allows you to make a proper comparison of what is best to fit your needs and budget. Don’t be afraid to try more than one product if your first pick doesn’t do the trick.

Most important, have fun and choose your poker chip set wisely! Good luck!
